There are many characters in Catch-22. I personaly think that a man by the name of Yossarian maybe the main character in the book, but it's hard to be sure. Yossarian is a bombarder for the Undited States Air Force. He also has a constant temperature of 101 degrees. So he can go in and out of the hospital any time of day. He and Dr. Daneeka are very fond of each other since Yossarian is always in the hostipal ward. Yossarian tries so hard to get off the island of Pianosa. But he can never get off because Dr. Daneeka will never sign to send him off. Daneeka will never send him, or anyone else for that matter, off because he's to selffish to think about anyone else.
Yossarian's first name is John, he is a funny character that thinks that everyone is out to get him. He also pretty much hates everyone on the island he has to work with and he seems to have a nack for arguing with just about everyone too. His closest friend is Dunbar and Hungry Joe. Yossarian keeps getting in fights with his superiors especially Coloel Cathcart. This is because Cathcart keeps rising the number of missions needed to be completed before they could go home. I think Yossarian mostly would fit the character Captin Hawkeye from the T.V. series M*A*S*H*. He reminds me of Hawkeye because of this time when Yossrian got a box of fruit and a new recruit by the name of Milo is trying to figure why he doesn't eat it and instead by just giving it away to people like Dunbar. Yossarian explains that it's good for him and that's why he doesn't eat it, and Milo becomes very confused(I would put a quote in buts a long conversation, almost 2 pages).
Now the reason Yossarian cannot get out of missions is because of catch-22. This is a way of saying that "anyone who is concerned about their own safety in the face of dangers must be sane". Which means if an insane person goes to superior and asks to be releived of his duty and not fly another mission, because they are afraid of being harmed, they will be deimed sane and be forced to fly that mission. So only an insane person can be reived but that insane person must ask the officer to leave. This Brings up catch-22, which states that the person is sane, since he is afraid for his own well being. It's a long and confusing idea but it still makes sense. So that's Yossarians problem. He cannot get off the Island, he hates everyone, and is convinced that everyone is out to get him.
